Our Community

  • Being a good neighbor

When our community benefits, so do we

We take great pride in being part of Hyde Park, a historic neighborhood on Chicago's South Side. Through our work, we strive to make a difference in our community every day. Scholars travel from around the world to give lectures to and teach our diverse group of students. The University of Chicago Medicine is the primary tertiary care provider on the South Side. We have faculty whose research focuses on health disparities and improving health outcomes. The community makes it possible for us to do our research; in turn, the research discoveries benefit the community as we strive to improve health outcomes here in Chicago.

As a division focused on the sciences, we also have a strong interest in the physical health of our community. The University of Chicago Medicine has launched the Get CARE initiative, designed to increase access to complex, emergency and trauma care in our community. This initiative reflects our long-term commitment to improving health and access to quality care for residents of Chicago's South Side through patient care, community-based research, and medical education. Get CARE will:

  • Transform Mitchell Hospital into a facility dedicated to cancer, which disproportionately affects South Siders.
  • Add Level 1 adult trauma care to our existing Level 1 pediatric trauma service
  • Build an expanded adult emergency department adjacent to the Center for Care & Discovery.

While we continue to develop new programs and initiatives like Get CARE, the University of Chicago Medicine provides ongoing benefits the community and we are proud of the work we do every day. Clinical trials run through the Biological Sciences Division give residents access to cutting-edge therapies and lead to better treatments for those in our community and beyond.

As part of the largest employer in the area, we take our responsibility within the community seriously. We know that when local residents and businesses benefit, we do, too. To that end, the University has launched UChicago Local, an initiative that connects South Side job seekers and businesses to opportunities at UChicago and in our vendor networks. Nearly 6,000 staff members — about one in three — live in Hyde Park or surrounding neighborhoods. In addition to procurement, our work with local businesses includes training seminars, vendor fairs, and internal promotions. We also place a great emphasis on diversity and inclusion. Developing a community with individuals of a variety of backgrounds and experiences adds richness and depth to our environment.
